congealedmeat This soundtrack is awesome, especially for its time. You can really hear how this influenced soundtracks to come, such as Hang On and Streets of Rage. "Battlefield" and "Stanray" especially evoke a Streets of Rage feel.

If nothing else, the cover art should warrant purchasing this album.

Welcome to the fantasy zone!
Favorite track: MAIN THEME.

disco-burkey I reckon this game has probably the most influential video game soundtracks ever created. The Main Theme is like a film score with its lengthy melodies - this was Sega taking game music seriously compared to other arcade games back in 1985. Legendary stuff from Master Hiro. Thank you Data Discs for reviving wonderful memories. Favorite track: MAIN THEME.

about

Space Harrier (1985) is perhaps most memorable for its lengthy and melodic opening theme, in which SEGA’s renowned in-house composer, Hiroshi “Hiro” Kawaguchi (OutRun, After Burner), armed with a Yamaha DX-7 and the most minimal of resources, sought to recreate the sound of a full band. In doing so, he defied the technological constraints of the time and inspired a generation of game composers, including Yuzo Koshiro (Streets of Rage), who has since cited Space Harrier as a defining early influence. Looking beyond its iconic main theme however, Space Harrier also shows Hiro playing with a range of sounds and styles, from infectious loops and jaunty battle themes, to the doomy and surprisingly bass-heavy WIWI JUMBO.

This album was originally released in 2018 as a vinyl-only edition and has been newly remastered in 2022 for digital. It features the complete 1985 arcade score, along with a bonus arranged version of the main theme by SEGA’s in-house live band (S.S.T. Band) which is exclusive to Bandcamp.
